The tab graveyard: how many edtech tools do you actually use?

Google Classroom. The gradebook. Canva for the anchor chart. A quiz tool for the review game. That PDF you found on TeachersPayTeachers. Your email. Slides. And somewhere in there, a tab you opened months ago that you're a little afraid to close.

Nobody set out to use fifteen tools. It happened one good idea at a time. Someone at a PD swore by one. A teammate sent you a link to another. The district bought a third whether you asked for it or not. Each one solved exactly one problem, and each one was free or close to it, so you said yes. Fifteen yeses later, you're basically running a small software company by yourself.

Why do teachers end up with so many edtech tools?

Because every tool is built to do one thing, and teaching is about forty things. No single app handles planning, making the materials, assigning them, grading them, and keeping track of who's falling behind. So you stitch it together yourself. One tool to build the worksheet, another to give the quiz, another to hold the grades, another to message parents.

The stitching is the part nobody counts. And it's the part wearing you out.

It's not the tools themselves. It's the moving between them. The same class roster typed into six different places. The kid's score that lives in one app while the gradebook lives in another, and the twenty minutes you spend copying numbers from one to the other. Remembering which login goes with which site. Remembering which tool you even used for that thing last month.

Here's the part that will get you: it doesn't get better as you add more. Every new tool promises to save time, and on its own, it does. But the tenth time-saver isn't saving you time anymore. It's just another tab, another password, another place a piece of your class lives. Somewhere along the way the math flipped, and more tools stopped meaning more help.

You feel it most at the seams. A quiz score that won't import. A worksheet you built in one place that you now have to rebuild in another to assign it. Materials scattered across five accounts so that finding last year's unit means logging into three of them and giving up on the fourth. None of those are teaching problems. They're plumbing problems, and you became the plumber by accident.

It's worth saying that half these tools are genuinely good. The quiz app makes a great quiz. The design tool makes a great anchor chart. The problem was never any single one of them. The problem is that nobody made them work together, so the job of connecting them landed on you, on top of the actual job.

You don't need another single-purpose app. You need fewer things that do more of the work in one place. The goal isn't to throw out everything that helps. It's to stop being the person who manually carries information from one tab to the next, all day, for free.
